February 26, 2008: Yuma Salmonella Outbreak

The Yuma County Health Department announced last week that anyone who may have taken home beef from the February 2, Hospice of Yuma roping roundup, should dispose of the meat, because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. Left-over beef was also donated to Crossroads Mission of Yuma.

Ninety-two cases of Salmonella food poisoning have been connected to the Yuma event.  The Yuma Health Department reports that so far 10 people have tested positive for Salmonella, and additional test results are pending.

Sarah Reynolds, staff writer for the Yuma Sun reported:

Yuma County Health Department officials said they only released information about meat containing Salmonella Thursday because they had not confirmed its presence until they received test results that day from the state.

“Until we have confirmed information that is fact, we don’t give out any information because it could be wrong,” said Becky Brooks, director of health services. “This one was an isolated incident. It’s different if something is widespread. If it’s widespread and could continue to infect, then we’d approach it differently.”

Despite the health department explanation, Yuma residents have questioned why, in light of 92 reported illnesses, a warning from the Yuma County Health Department was not issued prior to February 21.

February 16, 2008: Additional Case of Salmonella Paratypi B Food Poisoning Reported On Oahu

The Hawaii State Department of Health confirmed an additional case of Salmonella Paratyphi B food poisoning connected to the consumption of raw ahi.  The food poisoning victim reported eating ahi poke (a fish salad usually served as an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine), which had been bought at a local Oahu market.

A total of 34 cases have been reported on the island of Oahu since October of 2007. One California and two Colorado Salmonella cases were linked to the Hawaii Salmonella outbreak.

Doctor Paul Effler, Hawaii State Epidemiologist, stated, “The Department of Health is concerned about these continuing cases and with the help of the FDA we hope to identify the source so we can prevent any further illness.”

By comparing foods eaten by both ill and well persons, health officials originally identified raw ahi as the likely food poisoning culprit.  The FDA and State Department of Health, however, continue to search for the source of the contaminated fish.

The Hawaii State Department of Health also cautions and makes the following recommendation to consumers:

Salmonella typically causes diarrhea (may be bloody); the diarrhea is often accompanied by abdominal cramps and fever.  Symptoms typically begin within one to four days after exposure to the bacteria.  In infants, persons with poor underlying health and those with weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.  It is recommended you seek medical attention should you experience any of these symptoms after consuming raw fish.

February 11, 2008: Choyce Products Issues Fish Recall Due To Salmonella Contamination

Choyce Products of Honolulu, Hawaii has issued a recall for 5,452 pounds of frozen Yellowfin Tuna, because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall follows a public health investigation of approximately 35 confirmed cases of Salmonella Paratyphi B food poisoning.

Most of the Salmonella cases occurred in Hawaii on the island of Oahu, although DNA fingerprinting (a process that allows scientists to compare bacterial DNA), later linked one California and two Colorado Salmonella cases to the Hawaii Salmonella outbreak.

According to a company press release:

Choyce Products’ customers received the cubed tuna in frozen form. The frozen product is packaged in labeled white cardboard shipping boxes containing 22 pounds of product. These boxes each contain 11 2-pound packages of vacuum-packed product in unlabeled plastic bags. White stickers on the cardboard shipping boxes have the following code information:

  • Lot Number 0727408005899 with Production Dates October 1 and 2, 2007
  • Lot Number 0725008005899 with Production Date September 7, 2007
  • Lot Number 0726408005899 with Production Date September 21, 2007

The Salmonella contamination connected to Choyce Products tuna was discovered after the FDA sampled fish from a number of  local distributers in an effort to identify the source off the recent Salmonella Paratyphi B outbreak.

The Choyce Products’ press release also stated:

The frozen Yellowfin tuna was distributed on Oahu and most likely reached consumers in the form of a mixed, previously frozen, seafood product through its customers. Choyce Products received the tuna from a mainland importer who confirmed the tuna was sent from Indonesia.
