Kroger has announced that stores in located in Texas and Louisiana are recalling the following products due to the possible contamination with Salmonella.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may include chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.

Frontera Produce, Edinburg, TX, is recalling cilantro because of the possibility of contamination with Salmonella.
The product was distributed to two retail chain stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Louisiana and New Mexico. The product involved was lot number 118122 and had the UPC code of 033383801049. These products would have been purchased between July 20 and July 27, 2009.
Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Fireside Coffee Co., Swartz Creek, MI, is recalling chai tea packages due to the possible contamination with Salmonella.
The Fireside chai tea includes select lot numbers of four different flavors of tea including: spiced, chocolate, vanilla and decaf vanilla.
The recalled chai tea was sold nationwide at retail stores, through mail order and at art fairs.
According to the CDC, Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weak immune systems. People infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (infected aneurysms), infection of the lining of the heart, and arthritis.

The Colorado Department of Public Health has notified the FSIS that King Soopers, Inc., Denver, CO may be linked to 14 cases of food poisoning after finding a possible correlation between the ground beef and the reported illnesses. The CDPH determined that the type of bacteria was Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 after completing their investigations.
The list of products that are being recalled are listed below.
-
1-pound chubs of (93/7) ground beef. Each package bears the identifying case code “69558.”
-
1- 1.25-lb. tray packs of (96/4) ground beef. Each package bears the identifying case code “67164.”
-
1 - 1.25-lb. tray packs of (96/4) ground beef. Each package bears the identifying case code “67664.”
-
1 - 1.25-lb. tray packs of (93/7) ground beef. Each package bears the identifying case code “67663.”
-
1 - 1.25-lb. tray packs of (93/7) ground beef. Each package bears the identifying case code “67163.”
-
2.5 - 3-lb. tray packs of (93/7) ground beef. Each package bears the identifying case code “67654.”
-
6-pack trays of (93/7) ground beef patties. Each package bears the identifying case code “67106.”
-
4-pack trays of (93/7) ground beef patties. Each package bears the identifying case code “67115.”
The ground beef chub products bear a use-by/sell-by date between “05/31/09″ and “06/21/09;” the tray packs of ground beef bear a use-by/sell-by date between “06.02.09″ and “06.23.09;” and the ground beef patty products bear a use-by/sell-by date between “06.01.09″ and “06.22.09.”
The ground beef products were produced on various dates ranging from May 23, 2009 through June 13, 2009 and bear the establishment number “EST. 6250″ within the USDA Mark of Inspection, which is printed on the front of the packages. The ground beef products were distributed to retail establishments in Colo., Kan., Mo., Neb., N.M., Utah and Wyo.
The FSIS warns that this particular strain of Salmonella, Salmonella Typhimurium DT104, is resistant to many commonly prescribed drugs, which can increase the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals.
Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food, and the illness usually lasts 4-7 days. Your doctor can confirm a Salmonella diagnosis by culturing a stool sample for the presence of Salmonella bacteria. Infants, the elderly, and those with impaired immune systems are at greatest risk for complications due Salmonella infection. Tanimura & Antle have issued a press release that one lot of whole head romaine lettuce has been recalled due to possible contamination with Salmonella. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture notified the company after conducting tests on the product.
The cartons of bulk or wrapped whole head romaine lettuce being recalled are marked with the lot code 531380 and were harvested June 25 - July 2. This recall includes only this single lot of romaine; no other products are involved. Tanimura & Antle warn that any product purchased before July 23, 2009 should be discarded.
The recalled romaine was sold to retail, wholesale and food service outlets in all 50 states including Canada and Puerto Rico.
